bigedu.org - About

About this site...

The author of bigedu.org

bigedu.org is a personal website from an electronics engineer (me) from Valencia, Spain. It happens that in the information society that we live in, it's starting to get too big the amount of information that one needs to know to perform daily life, and many times this knowledge you only need to put it into practice very occasionally, so remembering is hard.

Fortunately I had the vision to see this coming and I've always made notes on many things, even more, I made them digital foreseeing the synergies that could be made with the developement of computing technology. Here at bigedu.org I start to release some of that potential by publishing some of my notes, accessible for myself and anyone 24x7 from any internet access wherever on the globe: Notes from school, notes on computer fixes, notes on cooking, notes from sports, simple domestic notes, academic notes, and so on.

The style of bigedu.org

I guess it could be said that bigedu.org is an educational website. But the true phylosophy behind the creation of bigedu.org is my love for independent thinking and the style of "do-it-yourself" (myself in this case). They don't lecture us in schools how to cook, how to use loundry or how to use an airport, for example. And what? Why not doing it us? Who says what should or shouldn't be education? After all its more important knowing how to avoid missing an airplane and cooking than knowing about many things they show in conventional education institutions!

Many of the notes on bigedu.org can suit a huge variety of people of ages and cultures because in many sections the explanations asume that the reader could be plain ignorant (like I was myself before learing what I explain in my notes once I know about it).

Some might find that the website design has a more corporate-looking style than a personal-looking style, but this is just wanting to do a professional design, although you will also notice it rarely sacrifices functionality for design (minimal logo, simple images, minimal text formatting and images conceived to let the page fit into 800x600 screens, and so on). So don't panic with spelling mistakes and any informal language while reading through it's content's, they are all just personal notes.

The bigedu.org CMS

Moreover bigedu.org uses an intelligent centralised code system (wow!) What does this mean? That I don't write the code regularly to develop this website. It's what in the website industry is called as content management system (CMS), only that I invented one for myself (do-it-yourself remember?) to post my notes which are also on how to do all kinds of things yourself.

Making my own CMS basically means that I broke my head with hours of programming at the beginning of the construction of the website and now to grow the website I just need to export my OpenOffice documents as HTML and the site integrates it on its own. It's just concentrating the few monthly headaches of developing a website into a nightmare first week, hoping that in the long term it starts to pay off (it already has) and thus being a winning strategy.

And of course the work I did creating the code for this site so that it was easy to make it grow, could be used by others. If you are interesting in this "intelligent centralised code system" (wow! Again) it will help you publish online your OpenOffice notes, just contact me via email. Just think how to find my email, (do it yourself ;-)

I hope bigedu.org helps you!
